MAKE POM(S) AND A TASSEL, THEN PLAN YOUR DESIGN
Before putting together your pom pom & tassel keychain, learn how to make pom poms here and how to make tassels here! You’ll need one tassel and one or more pom poms.
When it comes to making a tassel, you can either make a tassel with a clean loop and follow the instructions below to add a strand of worsted weight yarn to the top or you can plan ahead and use the worsted weight strand to tie your tassel at the top. Both ways work great!
Once your pom pom(s) and tassel are ready to go, plan your design to incorporate chunky beads that can fit over your yarn needle.
ADD YOUR TOP STRING, IF YOUR TASSEL DOESN’T HAVE WORSTED WEIGHT TOP STRING
If you’re using a tassel with a clean loop on top, thread your sturdy yarn strand onto a yarn needle and string the tassel onto about 2ft of worsted weight yarn by bringing the needle under the top loop of your tassel and placing the tassel in the center of the yarn strand. Secure the yarn in place at the top of the tassel by holding the two strands together and tying an overhand knot on top of the tassel.
ADD YOUR POM(S), BEADS & KEYCHAIN CLIP
Next, thread both ends of the yarn attached to your tassel onto your needle, then begin adding the poms and any beads in between them. STOP once you’ve added your last pom, leaving any top beads for the next step.
POM POM TIP: To string poms on, poke them with your yarn needle until you find the center. Before sliding the pom down onto the bag charm string, leave it on the yarn needle and look at it from all angles to make sure it’s centered. If it’s lopsided, remove the pom from the needle and try again until your pom looks straight, then push down onto the yarn. Repeat with remaining poms!
Above your top pom, separate the two strands of yarn, leaving the yarn needle on one strand. String on all of your top beads only onto the string attached to the yarn needle.
String on your keychain clip above the final bead, making sure that the keychain clip stays above the beads and doesn’t slide down over them. Next, bring your yarn needle back down through all of the top beads, pulling the tail of the yarn all the way through so that you can then remove the yarn needle.
TIE THE TWO YARN STRANDS TOGETHER TO SECURE YOUR BEADS
At this point, both yarn tails should be between the top pom and the first bead above it. To finish your bag charm, tie the two tails together securely with a triple knot and cut off the excess yarn.
Clip your adorable new charm onto your favorite bag or keys and enjoy!!
