24 Jul 23 07:07 what is the difference between a self-tapping screw and a self-drilling screw?what is the difference between a self-tapping screw and a self-drilling screw?

24 Jul 23 08:12A self drilling screw has a end that works as a drill which are supposed to not make the wood split, which can happen if you use a self tapping screw and don't pre drill a hole first.

24 Jul 23 09:00I only use those for metal. The left screw does not require a predilled hole. Drill length should be sufficient for the thickness of the embedding plate. Right screw may work for very thin sheet without pre drilling, but will likely not penetrate a thick sheet sufficiently to pull itself in. It may also require a lot of push to get it going and may overtorque and shear half way into a thicker sheet. Both will "thread" the hole.
--Einstein gave the same test to students every year. When asked why he would do something like that, "Because the answers had changed."

24 Jul 23 09:04Just as the names state.
A self tapping screw will will make its own threads when driven.
A self drilling screw will drill its own hole, then make its own threads.

24 Jul 23 09:29Yes you are right 1503-44, I didn't pay attention, those in the picture are metal screws, but as MintJulep says the basic principle is the same. There are versions for wood too.

25 Jul 23 05:53Any specific self-drilling or self-tapping drills brand you recommend?
(Mechanical)
25 Jul 23 17:22If the screws are for a DIY project, any will do. If critical for work project, use MS/MIL spec screws. I think most brands will do.

25 Jul 23 18:04One thing to keep in mind is that MS/MIL are slow moving standards. The inorganic type coatings are relatively new and are not as likely to be found in MS/MIL.The problem with self-drilling and self-tapping screws is that they have to be hard which eliminates highly corrosion resistant alloys. You're stuck with alloys like 410SS which have poor corrosion resistance hence the need for a high performance coating system. The coated fasteners are less likely to cause trouble in dissimilar metal combinations when the faster is more noble than the structure.
