What is the Function of Water-based Crosslinking Agent?

21 Mar.,2024

Water-based crosslinking agent, a water-soluble polymer compound, is a polymer synthesized by various different methods using water as the dispersing medium and adding an appropriate amount of emulsifier. Characterized by low viscosity, easy dispersion, no foaming, and no free formaldehyde, water-based crosslinkers have been widely used in coatings, inks, and adhesives.

Water-based crosslinking agent has the following characteristics:

  1. Good stability to water and most solvents

Water-based crosslinking agent takes water as the dispersion medium, so it has good stability to water and most solvents. The stability of crosslinking agent in water medium depends on its molecular weight and structure. Since the crosslinking agent is water-soluble, it can be completely dissolved in water, so it will not precipitate. The fact that aqueous crosslinkers contain carboxyl groups in their molecules gives aqueous crosslinkers good stability. Generally, the covalent interaction of the carboxyl group with the hydrophilic group occurs mainly between two hydrophilic groups. For example, acrylic emulsion contains carboxyl group and hydroxyl group, and there is hydrogen bonding between them. This hydrogen bonding makes the acrylic emulsion has good stability and is not easily affected by moisture, alkali, heat, light, oxygen and other factors, and it can remain stable under the influence of various factors, such as temperature, light and so on.

  1. Non-toxic and harmless, will not cause environmental pollution

The use of water-based crosslinking agent is to use water as a dispersing medium, adding emulsifiers and initiators, and reacting at a certain temperature to generate a polymer. This polymer is non-toxic and harmless, and will not cause environmental pollution.

(1) It can be used in many kinds of adhesives, such as: waterborne polyurethane, waterborne acrylic acid, waterborne polyurethane, waterborne epoxy and so on;

(2) It can be used at room temperature as well as at high temperature, which can meet the application requirements in various environments;

(3) Wide range of application, not only for various materials of the substrate, but also for materials such as wood and paper;

(4) Convenient construction, can be sprayed, brushed or rolled for construction;

(5) It can be used with a variety of additives;

(6) It has high cross-linking density and strength;

(7) Easy to use, can be adjusted according to the user’s needs.

As a modifier, water-based crosslinking agent can be used to improve the film-forming properties of water-based coatings, and can also be used to improve the fluidity of water-based inks, and can also be used to improve the water resistance of water-based adhesives.

Water-based crosslinking agent in the production of water as a dispersing medium, when used to add the appropriate amount of dispersant can be. There is no need to use organic solvents for dissolution, small impact on the production environment, easy to use. Application of water-based crosslinking agent in coatings: water-based crosslinking agent is mainly used in coatings, which can make the curing speed of the coating faster, lower curing temperature. At the same time, because water-based crosslinking agent is mainly water as a dispersing medium, in the production of organic solvents do not need to add, which greatly reduces the production cost. In addition, it also reduces the emission of harmful substances such as VOC.

Water-based crosslinking agent can use water as a solvent, does not contain any organic solvents, reducing the production process of organic solvents on the environment. Low viscosity and easy to disperse, can use very low dosing concentration, very little dosing rate to obtain higher crosslinking efficiency; can be prepared at a lower temperature. And it does not contain free formaldehyde, avoiding the problem of formaldehyde pollution.
