Here at BS Fixings, we stock a wide variety of fixing and fastening products, with items that you will be very familiar with and others that you might not have a clue about! So, to help you out, we like to create blog posts about the products we stock, explaining how they work and what they are used for. In this blog post, we are going to explain what threaded bars are and how they might be of use to you!

Threaded bars are used widely within the construction industry as a type of fastener to provide structural stability to walls, ceilings, ductwork, and more.  You might also know a threaded bar as:

  • A threaded rod
  • Studding
  • A threaded stud
  • All thread
  • A screw rod

What is a threaded bar?

A threaded bar is a type of fastener that consists of a long, straight metal rod with threads that run along its length. These threads are generally cut with a machine and are compatible with nuts, washers, and other threaded accessories. Threaded bars are available in a variety of diameters and lengths, and are typically manufactured out of stainless steel, zinc-plated steel, aluminium, and brass to suit a range of requirements. They work similarly to a long bolt or screw, designed to provide superior rigidity between two materials when joining them together.

Common uses for threaded bars

Threaded bars are used for various purposes which we have listed below:

  • Structural support – within the construction industry, threaded bars are used to provide support when two or more components/materials need a secure connection. Due to their strength and durability, they are commonly used to fasten items such as pipework, HVAC systems, and cables to walls and ceilings. They can also be used with a wide range of materials, whether you need to secure metal, concrete, or wood structures together.
  • Plumbing and electrical work - threaded bars are often used in plumbing and electrical work to secure pipes and conduits in place. They can be used to create hangers or supports, ensuring that pipes and conduits are fixed securely.
  • Automotive, aerospace, and marine industry – threaded bars can withstand extreme levels of pressure and can be used in a variety of environments due to their resilience against corrosion. Depending on the choice of material, threaded bars can be used for automotive and aerospace repairs as well as marine engineering.
  • DIY projects – even for DIY tasks, threaded bars can be used to secure shelving units or furniture together where a traditional screw or bolt will not suffice.

Types of threaded bars

There are many types of threaded bars, each having their own unique features and functions.

Fully threaded

A fully threaded bar has threads which run along its entire length. They are the most popular type of bar, as the full thread allows nuts and washers to mate at any point along the rod.

Double-end stud

This type of threaded bar is threaded equally at both ends of the rod; however, they do not meet up in the centre, creating a smooth middle segment. Due to the unthreaded section, double-end studs can be used with unthreaded holes and are commonly used in the fabrication of doors.

Tap-end stud

Tap-end studs are similar to double-end studs with threading at both ends of the rod, however, the threaded section is longer at one end than the other.

Hollow threaded rod

Hollow threaded rods are designed with an opening at each end of the rod, which is connected across its entire length. This makes this type of rod ideal for electrical work, as cables and wires can be passed through the rod to mount light fixtures.

Threaded rod, also known as threaded bar, threaded studding or screw rod, is a common fastener type. It is used much the same way as a very long, thick bolt or screw. Screwed rod threading might run the full length of the stud (all-thread), or partway along from both ends.

Threaded rods and stud bolts are widely used wherever a fastener of greater length and rigidity is needed to secure two items together. They are often found securing wood or metal items together or being used to give additional strength to structures supported by concrete and other materials. The threading makes it easy to attach nuts and other fixings to the rod as required.

You will find a wide variety of sizes, gauges and load capacities available to suit all kinds of jobs. Some varieties may have a drive slot in one end, making them easier to install, although most studding does not feature a head in the same way that most bolts and screws do.
