Woven Wire Gabions are metal wire baskets made of double twisted steel woven wire mesh in hexasgonal opening, filled with rocks / stones, used in river control and various slope protection works. The flexible woven wire mesh gabions have a popular hexagonal opening with the aperture of 80x100mm, wire diameter of 2.7mm and selvedge wire of 3.4mm diameter. Woven wire basket gabions are supplied with steel reinforcing wires inserted during the manufacturing process to facilitate closing during installation.
Treatment: Wire for making of woven mesh gabions is electro galvanized, HDG galvanized, pvc or Galfan coated. Dimensions and sizes of woven wire mesh gabions can be customized.
Woven gabions get the name in contrast with welded gabions. Gabions can be made of woven wire mesh flexible twisted, they can also be made of welded mesh.
Main differences:
The opening types of the woven gabions are normally hexagonal with wires twisted, while the welded gabions are normally square opening or diamond opening.
Processing involved: Woven gabions are made by twisting of wire, while welded gabions are made by welding of steel wire. Both are popular structure units for retaining, geogrid and reinforcing.
Gabion dimensions
The dimensions of the gabion basket: 1.50m (width) x 1.00 (height) x 2.00m (length) (standard dimensions).
Various length is available; a gabion length of 4.00m is also possible.
The gabion box is divided into internal cells of 1.00m, by diaphragms.
Double twisted wire mesh is used. The double twisted wire mesh and the lacing wire or split rings used are conform the standard for gabion manufacture: ASTM A975-97 (2003).
The relevant European standards for mechanical and corrosion protection properties of the wire and the mesh are given in Table
Mesh type: 80 x 100 mm, double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh.
Corrosion protection
Because of the aggressiveness of marine environment arising from wave and salt action, the most highly corrosion galvanisation process should be used, together with plastic coating.
To increase durability, steel wires should be protected from corrosion risks. Steel should be highly galvanised with galfan and covered with plastic coating.
Mesh wire diameter: 3.9mm, coating min. mc = 290 g/m²
Corrosion protection for the woven wire mesh is provided in three ways:
One is the process of galvanising the wire
Second way is by an additional polymer coating, PVC, manufactured in accordance with EN 10245:2001.
Third way is by Galfan coating, comprises of 95% zinc and 5% aluminium.
A Galfan coating is three to four times more durable than the same amount of conventional zinc protection.
