What is the difference between Transport Wheelchairs and Standard Manual Wheelchairs?
If you are looking for more details, kindly visit our website.
This is one of the most asked questions among our clients. Although they look very similar, they have significant differences.
At first glance, Transport Wheelchairs have 4 smaller wheels where the user will have to get pushed around whereas Manual Wheelchairs have 2 large wheels and 2 smaller wheels which are designed so the user is able to propel him or herself.
On a deeper level, they are quite different.
Transport Wheelchairs are very light, at about 20 lbs., are easily foldable and transportable. These are more suitable for users who are planning to sit for short trips and always with someone who can push the wheelchair. These are not very customizable but typically come in 17 or 19 wide seats.
Manual Wheelchairs on the other hand, which tend to be heavier, are approximately at the lowest 25 lbs. (without leg rests) and more depending on the model. These are less transportable, but some models have detachable wheel options to make it easier for loading and unloading. As these are generally for users who spend a lot of time in the wheelchair, they are all designed to be highly customizable in size, comfort, and more.

According to study, it is estimated 80% to 90% of wheelchair users do not fit properly in their wheelchair. *1
Standard wheelchairs only able to support users in their initial stages of rehabilitation. When the user wants to become more active and independent, standard wheelchair can limit them because the wheelchair size is not suitable for them, wheelchair is heavy, etc.

Benefits of Custom Wheelchair
Biomechanics
Biomechanics relates to the application of mechanical laws to the musculoskeletal system and locomotion of the human body*4. Biomechanics ensures the correct arm position to maximise push range, maximises wheelchair performance and reduces the risk of injury and fatigue.
Individual Frame Size
The frame is custom made according to individual requirements.
Ergonomic Backrest
An ergonomic backrest follows the contours of the spine to match the users body shape. It ensures the spine is in the most comfortable and optimum postural position.
Custom Frame Design
The individual measurements control the space which the legs and feet will be positioned in by using different designs. It supports and places the legs in the most optimum position for maximum comfort and stability.
Lightweight
Individual measurements keep the frame as compact as possible to minimise weight.
