The radiator is the central component of your vehicle's cooling system. What Your Radiator Does

If your engine does overheat, it could be a fault within the radiator or another cooling system component that you will want to have inspected and fixed.

There's a reason they call it "antifreeze," and that's because it helps keep engine components from seizing up. Basically, the coolant increases the boiling point of the engine while also decreasing the freezing point. That way, your engine runs better no matter what the external conditions are. You can check the coolant levels and fluid quality yourself. Be careful when opening the radiator cap if the car is still hot or the engine is running. The cap itself can get very hot, so use a rag. Also, a lot of pressure can be built up inside, so it can release violently when opened. This is especially true if the car is already starting to overheat and steam is building up in the radiator. 

If the fluid level is low, make sure there are no noticeable leaks of the bright yellow/green coolant fluid. You can refill the reservoir yourself. You typically want a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. Some store-bought radiator fluids will already have the proper mix while others you have to add the water yourself. Just read the label before putting any new fluid in.
