6 DIY rattan decor ideas to elevate your home

I love rattan – do you?  It’s become something of a trend in the last couple of years and it’s here to stay. There’s a lot of beautiful rattan furniture and decor accessories available out there but they can be pretty expensive.  So if you want rattan in your home without blowing the budget then these DIY rattan decor ideas are for you.

Rattan or cane works well in any type of decor but I especially love it with modern Scandinavian interiors.  Rattan instantly brings warmth and adds a lovely contrast to the modern pieces you have.  It’s a natural material which is another bonus and it instantly softens the look of a room.

I’ve picked out a range of DIY rattan decor ideas from big projects to quick and easy ones so you can choose which ones to attempt.  All the projects, big or small, will add a lovely touch to your home.

6 DIY rattan decor ideas

Room dividers can be useful in many situations especially if you live in an open plan space or in a small space.  This simple DIY cane room divider is not only easy to make but it’s an Ikea Ivar hack too!  I love that it’s not just a room divider – you can add clips and hooks to display stuff on it too.

For a smaller project, I love these rattan DIY pen holders.  They’re one of my very own DIY’s and I love how they add texture and interest to my desk.  A little touch of rattan is often enough to add warmth to a space, especially if it’s a small space like my home office.

I’m not gong to lie – this isn’t the easiest rattan DIY project but if you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll have a stunning DIY rattan daybed.  I’ve seen these daybeds retail for around $1000 (and more) but making it yourself will cost approx $150.  It doesn’t look like a DIY job either so you get a bargain without compromising on looks.

As stunning as the rattan daybed is not all of us have the time or skills to pull that off so instead here’s an easy, pretty and practical rattan DIY that anyone can make.  These rattan jewellery organisers aren’t just handy for storing your earrings and necklaces but they make a lovely feature too.

This is another Ikea hack but this time it’s for transforming a simple bookcase in to a stunning rattan cabinet.  If you need some extra storage and love your rattan, this cabinet DIY is for you.  And it’s an easy DIY done with hot glue rather than any fancy tools.  (This cabinet is by peony & honey but I’ve linked to the tutorial she followed).

This rattan sliding door is so gorgeous.  It especially works in this kitchen because of the contrast of materials you have in this room.  But beyond that, it’s a much lighter door than a heavy normal door which works especially well when in smaller spaces or when you need to maximise light.  Unfortunately they haven’t shared the tutorial but the tutorial above (for the cabinet doors) should be a good guide.

For the last of these ideas it’s these DIY rattan shelves perfect for a kids room. But I’m also loving the idea of using them as a magazine display shelf or a display for beautiful books.  This is another Ikea hack (aren’t Ikea hacks just the best?) and it’s a simple project – perfect if it’s you first time working with cane.

Which of these DIY rattan decor ideas will you try first?
