My collar will be 14" wide. It will be about ten inches below grade and five inches above grade. For a collar this size: How thick? I am sure you are not making it 15" thick, 4" is usually all that is needed.1. What size rebar would I use? #3 or #4, #4 rebar is cheaper than #3 at the Lowes in my area, go figure...
2. Where/how does the rebar get placed? How far from the bottom , top and sides? 2 horizontal rows, 2" off bottom and sides, make sure a min of 1" cover. Splices to have a 12" or 15" overlap, depending upon the bar chosen. 3. Can rebar of the size I need be bend with a pipe bender thingy? <-admire my technical expertise? #3 easy, #4 a little more effort, but yes. You can also make a jig to be used in a vise, along with a three foot section of 1" pipe, whcih makes the job pretty easy.4. What do I use to cut the stuff? Sawzall? Dremel? Hatchett? Angle grinder with correct metal cutting blade or diamond blade as you choose.5. If I get the rebar down and it rains and starts to rust, did I ruin anything? I'm won't be able to do this fast because I have no clue what I am doing! As long as you get to it in a timely matter, no problem, just don't let it sit for weeks. Thanks for your help
